This is your chance to tour Camp Seymour's 100+ year-old forest in the company of foresters
and naturalists. For more than a decade, the camp has been practicing active forest
stewardship through thinning, root rot management, hazard tree removal, and tree planting —
offering a valuable chance to see what these actions look like after a decade of regrowth and
how they might result in healthier forests. Then we'll head inside for food and drink and to talk
about what we have seen. After a short presentation, we will discuss emerging conservation
topics in our own neighborhoods.
1 pm – 3:30 pm
On short, guided-hike rotations, you will:
Hear from land managers on long-term forest stewardship
Talk to the foresters who coordinated the work
Explore the biodiversity of this legacy forest with experienced naturalists
3:30 pm – 5 pm
After, in the dining hall, you will:
Enjoy snacks with tea, hot cider, and other drinks
Listen to a talk on forest conservation issues
Get to know other locals who care about our environment
Adrian Wolf, stewardship director at Great Peninsula Conservancy, will speak on the ecological forest management being done at GPC preserves and the Listen Up project that deploys remote birdsong monitoring devices to gauge changes in the bird community pre- and post- thinning. Here is the NPR article on it.
Come for the first half, the second half, or all of it.
